Dear Families,
We have been learning about how the US Government works for the past few weeks, and we are almost ready to test our knowledge on the topic. The test will be next week Tuesday. (I know, I know, the teacher giving a test on Halloween...but it's better than having a test the night AFTER Halloween :) Various resources are coming home as a study guide tonight. Students will have a completed crossword puzzle (organizer drawn on back is also important to study), a brochure that they completed after researching online (we went over this in class so their answer SHOULD be all correct), flashcards with definitions on the back, as well as a few worksheets with information. This is a big test, and students should spend time studying this weekend to be prepared.
Helpful videos that we watched in class-click link to watch and review with your child.
The Preamble
I'm Just a Bill
Three Ring Government
3 Levels of Government
3 Branches of Government
Reminders-
XtraMath-A note came home on Thursday about a program called XtraMath. This is replacing FLASHCARDS...a collective YAY! I know that not everyone has a computer, so I have flashcards available if this program will not work for your family. There is also an app available for phones, tablets, etc. The app costs $5, but will be used throughout the whole year for math fact practice.
Math Box Quiz-Each Friday, your child will come home with a corrected Math Box Quiz. This quiz is based on the morning work that we solve and correct together each day. FYI, this is my process for these boxes... Monday and Tuesday students can work with each other on boxes. Wednesday and Thursday they should try on their own but ask me if they have any questions. Friday we have a quiz. Each day they are the same concept but with different numbers. Please go over the quiz with your child and sign their agenda that you looked over it together.
Halloween Party Plans-Emails went home to those who signed up to bring treats to our party. We will have the parade (weather permitting) after lunch. (We will watch a movie in class if the parade is cancelled.) Then we will come back and have snacks in our classroom. Recess is from 1:55-2:15 and we will play games from 2:20-3:30.
Halloween Costumes-As your child is planning out his/her costume please remember to make sure they are school appropriate. If the costume comes with a weapon please refrain from sending that to school. Michigan State Law has zero tolerance for any kind of weapon, plastic or otherwise, from being on school premises. Also talk to your child about whether he/she may wear the costume at recess. If it is not raining, students will go outside for recess.
Early Release-Friday, Nov. 3
Ask your child about-
-What can the president do if he doesn't agree with a law? (Veto)
-How has your character changed in your book? Explain the theory that you are growing about your character.
-How is drafting going in writing workshop? Are you working on the rising action of your story? What is your favorite part so far?
-Do you enjoy doing Math Workshop for Math time? How is it different than whole group math?
What we learned this week-
Reading-
I can revise my theory about a character.
I can use precise language when describing my character.
Writing-
I can draft a realistic fiction piece. (We wrote the heart of our story this week and scenes 1, 2, and 3)
Social Studies-
I can describe how a bill becomes a law.
I can understand the 3 branches of government.
I can research using technology.
Math-
I can multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.
Have a wonderful weekend!
