Dear Families,
We have started our next writing unit, realistic fiction. Writing fiction is an exciting, but at times daunting, task. Students are learning how to write something that could actually happen, but has in interesting and engaging story line. We have brainstormed ideas and will start the drafting process next week. Remind your student that writing ideas and inspiration are everywhere! They should keep their eyes and ears open to interesting ideas that happen in our everyday lives.
Reminders:
Valentine's Day-Please send your child with a box (shoe box or cereal) for decorating by Monday. We will pass our Valentine's cards out after recess at 2:45 and have snacks. We will play games earlier in the day.
Student should bring cards for their classmates on Tuesday. Please let me know if you have questions.
Flashcards-Should be studied for 2-5 minutes each night. Students who are still working on multiplication should especially be pushing themselves to master their facts for their timed test each week.
Spelling-Students should continue to write their spelling list in their agenda each night. If they pass with 100% this first week, they do not need to practice words the following week.
Ask your child about:
1. What is one idea you have for your realistic fiction writing piece?
2. How are you feeling about addition and subtraction in math? We will test on this concept next week.
3. What are you researching for your nonfiction reading poster?
4. How do you plan to decorate your Valentine's box next week? Will you go with traditional Valentine's colors and hearts? Or will you choose a theme like an animal or cartoon character?
What we learned this week:
Writing-
I can generate ideas for realistic fiction.
I can describe an interesting setting.
Math-
I can round to the nearest 10 and 100.
I can add 3 digit numbers with regrouping.
Reading-
I can identify the 5 nonfiction text structures.
I can take notes using graphic organizers.
Science-
I can show what I know about light and sound. (Test coming home early next week)
Social Studies-
I can explain what it takes to start your own business. (Entrepreneur)
I can identify natural, capital, and human resources.
Have a great weekend!
